Clinical Trials @ The Northside festival

On the Alternate cover this month
Somer[left] and Caryn: Clinical Trials
If you remember anything this summer as far as music, Clinical Trials is it. One of the outrageously vibrant, electro-infused rock bands featured @ The Northside festival[started by The L-Magazine]. The band is a female duo featuring singer/guitarist Somer Bingham and drummer Caryn[replacing Cici Harrison]. Their crazy, fun-loving personality floats easily through their talent and swagger on stage. Their sound is a pulsating rhythmic wave peaking high and coming at you low. Somers voice and guitar playing leaves your senses buzzing from the perfection that is the two. It puts you in the mood to be apart of her Clinical Trial of sound, willingly strapped to a table. Caryn's drumming is the haunting beat reverberating like a splinter, in the back of your mind. She becomes one with her instruments, sending out her sound-waves like a siren on the rocks, calling you to the brink. Checkout the website, its really stylish without being flashy. On it you can hear some of the tracks. "Discoheadphones" is an electro-infused track that comes across like a glorious tech-rock chant, for a mood throbbing in your mind. It's one of my favorite tracks. "White fence"[rough mix]is a sultry sounding, slightly somber track with a vibrant edgy flow. The tempo, rhythm and and mood is so God damn haunting. Somer Bingham[Bklyn native]is the brain-child behind this fantastic thing that is, Clinical Trials.   Some of the bands influences are Joan Jett, PJ Harvey and Nirvana. "They thankfully take it a step further with confidence to show us the refreshing evolution of where those pioneers have brought us now"[Just another music blog]. Clinical Trials will be on stage @ The "Them" Party: A night of music, film, and performance. Wednesday, July 13th, @ the Public Assembly. 70 north 6th st Bklyn. If you would like to know more:www.clinicaltrialsmusic.com  Article & Photos by K.K.W. "Art is the reason, Art is the way"

AIM Exhibit @ The Bronx Museum of Art

AIM, or Artist in the Marketplace, is a program through which a dual Exhibition(Bronx Calling & Taking AIM) involving 72 artist's showcasing some of their creations at The Bronx Museum of the Arts. The artists in the exhibition were all part of the museums 13 week program(AIM). "Since 1980, the Artist In the Marketplace program has marked the museums on going commitment to support artists by providing training, encouragement, and a venue for exhibition". This is the 30th anniversary of the program, so the museum and Wave Hill hosted the first AIM Biennial. The dual exhibit-Bronx calling and Taking AIM- is curated by Wayne Northcross, Jose Ruiz, Marysol Nieves and Monica Espinel. One of the artist in the exhibit, Glendalys Medina, said "In art school, they don't prepare you for anything else but the creative side. I needed input on the business side of it"(1). Medina's creations, "The Shank",  is a stylish mixed-media piece incorporating yarn, nails and wood. Aside from The Bronx Museum of the Arts Glendalys was featured @ Dash Gallery(DD172) in Tribeca. An exhibit called DIY-(Do it Yourself). The show was curated by Derrick Adams, himself an amazing artist. I had met her while I was an intern at the Gallery(The brain-child of Damon Dash). Her artwork, @ DD172 & Bronx museum, has a beautiful, modern-urban design feel to it. At once you know,  this is someone who takes creativity to almost any field, and brings something back. Art you have to put in a beautiful room somewhere. She's the type of artist who walks into a hardware store and starts combining objects in her mind. Glendalys(www.glendalysmedina.com )will also be performing spoken word at Wave Hill on July 10th. "I'm really shy, so it'll be terrifying to stand there in front of people and performing. But thats why I'm doing it. Its about empowering myself and doing thing's I wouldn't normally do"(2). The Bronx Museum of the Arts is the flagship cultural institution of the Bronx and was founded in 1971. It focuses on 20th century and contemporary art, while serving the culturally diverse populations of the Bronx and the greater New York metropolitan area. The exhibit will be open to the public until September 5th 2011. If you would like to know more:www.bronxmuseum.org  Article & photos by K.K.W. Video By Menetho1. Noon:30 @ The Northside festival

Showing a bit of their funny side. Perfect for our
first cover. Aissa(top)
 Blue, and Vivianne
It was the last weekend of The Northside festival in Williamsburg Bklyn and noon:30 was on stage @ Bruar falls bar, playing a great set. Once again Vivianne(on drums/visuals), Aissa(on guitar, bass and electric sound), and Blue(on vocals and bass) were plugged into the ever flowing great stream of music. The three were radiating beautiful sound-waves that eclipse's you and leaves you wanting more. Their smash EP is already out for sale through I-tunes and CDbaby with tracks like "French song", with its hard hitting tech-punk rhythm that really gets you up. "Stop-Loss" has the feel of a lovers lament with an awesome electro-bass sound and stellar drumming coming with it. The song has the feel of a chant and an accusation all at once, with only instruments at one point, then the chorus come in(Blue's hard hitting, soft voice): "you have all of me". Haunting, somber, with an air of cool mischief. "Absynthe" is a beautiful abyss of emotion and feeling that can seem like a plea, somber-laced regret, or a crazy oath of affection for someone your trying to reach. You want pulse pounding feelings, multi-leveled harmonics with that laid-back 3 drink feeling? "Crossroads" will take you there(you'll have to find ur own way back). I downloaded it 5 days ago and can't get enough. Noon:30's sound is a blend of tech, punk, rhythm&Blues and the soul of three young women who are walking a path strewn with difficulties. And of course there's the joy, they are one of the best in Bklyn and possibly the U.S. Not everyone knows it yet, but their gonna. The group is currently independent, playing for the fans(next shows are Toronto, ON-Toronto pride: Alexander Parkette and Washington D.C, @ The Velvet lounge). noon:30 is one those great things you come across in N.Y.C(check-out the first post on them[January 2011])that reminds you to go out and find new things, and to support your local Artist's.  Enjoy the video("Crossroads")from that performance @ The Northside festival.
