Our list: The New Americans (what independence has given rise to). By K.K.W

"...1783 was a very good year. Mozart wrote his great mass, the Montgolfier brothers went up in there first balloon, and England recognized the independence of the United States..." [1].

While the rest of America will pay homage to our "patriotic founding fathers", I'll shine the light on some who embody [by their actions], what independence have given rise to. It wasn't easy being an "American" at the signing of the declaration of independence, nor in 1783, and it certainly isn't easy in our time. It means living with a past that shows our virtue and the ugliness of our national and social hypocrisy, while struggling to live in an ever changing present.

We seek to be knowledgeable, yet have little time for it, swimming in freedom like dolphins & sharks. Creating, critical, devouring, charmingly demented, lamenting, loving, lounging and expounding the virtues of eco-green, health and sustainability. We are a mixture - figuratively & literally - of almost all things in the world and yet can seem like aliens even to our own. We believe in equality though know in our hearts we're are not all equal [and probably never will be]. Full of pride and at times even little vain, though all to aware of our imperfect(s). The best of our qualities will always shine through the fog of ignorance, the dark of apathy and light the way; for ourselves...those who may at times look to us.
