Burhan Ahmeti: Great Art! By K.K.W

Its said that form follows function, and if this is true Ahmeti's artwork [the form]
functions as a path for a message - "...that our family and homeland are sacred..." (1). This also means that the form is proved - "Art is the reason, art is the way" (2).

Burhan Ahmeti's artwork is based on the execution of traditional techniques - in this case lithography. His work could be divided into two figurative groups, the first being representative, of physical structures that form the base of society and family - the house. The visual aspect of this is illustrative , simplistic, and remarkably adept at giving the sense of abstraction, notions of motherland. The sacred, the home as a womb - ideas that are immensely powerful and ethnically charged for both Macedonians and Albanians.

The second group is comprised of expressive - figurative abstract work. These images accent the expression of energy, giving the viewer distinctive and substantial emotions, from deep within the artist. "...this fact is linked closely to the language taught in this school, which historically has and still continues today to lean more towards an artistic education that is congruent , to the manifests of the art movements of the 19th and 20th centuries..." The more you get to know Ahmeti's artwork, you see that its themes are both very personal, and yet universal. The first group of his work reminds me of a song, introduced to me by a friend, [Sasha Sagan-choreographer & ballet dancer from Skopje], "To build a home" by Cinematic Orchestra. "There is a house built out of stone, wooded floors, walls and window-sill's. Tables and chairs worn by all of the dust...this is a place I don't feel alone..."
