Beauty in complex simplicity: By Aleksandar Ares, with photo's by K.K.W.

One of the first thoughts that came to mind while looking at Pavlovska's art-work: gritty - graffiti. Words scratched into dark pigment, or dark pigment used to
scratch words onto a white background, with a force, simplicity,

and elegance. The force used to create it gives a resonance, and power thats akin to the primitive [sympathetic magic]. Words symbolize communication, speech, knowledge and power.
Maria Pavlovska.
The beauty of its simplicity comes from a gritty appeal, which is both modern and ancient. The same technique was used by various people who would scrawl words or pictures on walls, or a large rock. In the modern world her work is similar to scratchitti in its vibrance, style and look. There's a sense of counter-cultural appropriation towards a creative point - not unlike the use of graffiti by artist's Keith Haring and Jean Michael Basquiat.

Pavlovska's creations are a daring take on simplicity, akin to neo-expressionism of the mid-to-late 1970's and 1980's. To look at them is wonder; what goes on in the mind of its creator? Are her thoughts embedded within the gritty lines? Does she transfer power from herself to the work, and into the viewer? She gives use much, and yet leaves many questions.
